Themajorityoftheworld’speoplehaverespondedwithaclamorformoresevereconservationofournaturalresources.Thisisurgentlynecessary,indeed.Itmustberealizedthatmuchofourenergy,intheformofoil,coal,gas,orelectricity,hasbeenwantonlyconsumed.Ifthingsgoonlikethis,wewillleaveforourdescendantsadevastatedworld,avaststretchofwasteland.So,fromnowon,wewillhavetomakeseriouseffortstopractiseeconomyinusingenergyandcutdownwasteofanyformsoastoslowdownthepresentdrainonourlimitedresources.
Butconservationaloneisnotalltheanswer.Thebestwaytosolvetheenergyproblemis,Ithink,todevelopnewsourcesofenergy.Itisobviousthat,evenifwesavemuchenergybyusingitcarefully,ournaturalresources,howeverabundant,willrunoutultimately.Andwhentheyareunexploredareasseemstobetheonlywayoutofourpredicament.
